Double vs triple directly refers to the number of glass panes in your window. Double has two panes and triple has three glass panes as indicated with space in-between to be filled with gas. A lot goes into making a window what it is and in this day and age of energy efficient windows that concept has become more fact. In the words of Joan Maisonneuve, a policy manager with the Canadian Home Builders’ Association, “A window is not just a piece of glass anymore. It’s a piece of technology.[1]

Double Pane Windows

As stated before, Double pane windows are made up of two panes of glass separated with a spacer and filled with gas. Double pane windows can cut down your heat loss up to 50%. They are also cheaper than triple pane windows. You make back the expense in energy savings up front. You get a little more natural light with double pane than triple pane because there’s less glass for sunlight to go through.

Triple Pane Windows

Triple Pane windows have three glass panes with two spacers instead of the one spacer found in the double pane glass. Triple pane tends to be a pricier than its counterpart. They are more resistant to condensation[2], and tend to be up to 20% more efficient than double pane windows. The additional pane of glass also helps with noise reduction

Despite its benefits, triple pane windows tend to be heavier than double pane windows, so you have to make sure they’re installed properly and have enough support.

At the end of the day it’s your choice between double or triple pane. No matter which choice you go with, just make sure your window comes with a heat reflector film for the best level of energy savings. Ready to start your journey of window replacement? We can help!
