Prepping for Spring as a Homeowner

Spring is rapidly approaching and we are grateful for the warmer weather and longer days. Along with the great weather, however, comes some extra responsibilities around the house to make sure you are prepared for the warmer weather coming. In this blog we will cover a few of the important steps to take to prepare for spring!

Clean Gutters and Downspouts

Throughout the winter, your gutters and downspouts can become clogged with frozen leaves and dirt. Once the weather is warmer and it starts to rain, this frozen debris not only hinders your gutters ability to operate well but it also puts your home at risk of damage. The eaves and trims next to your gutters and downspouts could begin to rot due to their compromised effectiveness. Make sure you fully clean them so water can effortlessly pass through and your home does not get damaged in the process.

Clean and Repair Window and Door Screens

Your window and door screens are a great way to get fresh air into your home during spring and summer but they may have been harmed during winter. To clean them, take the screens out and clean with soap and water and make sure that any damages are repaired as well. Taking these steps will ensure that you can enjoy all of the benefits of your screens without worrying about allowing bugs into your home.

Touch-up Paint Chips

Winter can be very harmful to the paint on the exterior of your home particularly around windows and doors. Spring is a great time to touch these spots up and make sure that there is no exposed wood during this rainy season.

Get Lawn Equipment Ready

This step is simpler than it sounds. All you need to do is bring out your lawn equipment and drain the oil and gas and unplug the old spark plug and replace it all. Doing this will allow your equipment to run at its best possible capacity and will extend their lifespan as well.

Check and Replace Batteries in Smoke Detectors

This one is not weather related but there is never a bad time to ensure that your smoke detectors are working properly. While you are working on things around the rest of your house, it is a good idea to take care of your smoke detectors as well because they are obviously very important.

Spring is an exciting time of year but it is important to maximize the season by making sure your home is prepared for the approaching warm weather. Taking these quick and easy steps to prepare your home for spring will increase the lifespan of your home and keep your appliances working correctly for as long as possible!
